Hatchet 3 review

Hatchet 3 was the horror film of the Hatchet trilogy. It chronicles Victor Crowley's ongoing adventures in Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp, as well as his brutal murderous rampage. Kane Hodder portrays Victor Crowley while Brian Quinn plays Deputy Winslow. Rileah Vanbilt plays Misty.

The film's greatest strength is its use of practical special effects. Hatchet 3 uses a majority of makeup effects that are practical as well as sets. This is a departure from many horror movies today that rely heavily upon CG effects. It also features some really horrifying moments.

Kane Hodder is a standout in the ensemble and is a formidable villain. It's like a slasher film from the 1980s and the dialogue is somewhat funny and snarky. There are also some genuinely funny moments throughout that provide comedic contrast to the heart-wrenching action.

However, due to the limited budget (reportedly just $1 million) most of the locations are re-used from earlier films in the series. The identical boat house was featured twice in the film and much of it appears to be a re-use from other films in this franchise. Hatchet or Hatchet (click link) II may be able to recognize it as familiar, which could result in the film feeling almost too familiar.

Overall, Hatchet 3 was a good series. There were many gory moments and several great performances by the cast.
